September 2009
Homework is a very important part of your
child's day. It helps your child to review recently learned skills, helps you
to have your thumb on the pulse of his/her progress (or difficulties) and helps
to communicate to your child that you value his education and what is being
learned in school. Homework is a reflection of what I introduced
in class that day. Please help your child with the assignment if necessary, but do not do the homework for your
child. The more independence that is encouraged, the more successful your child
will be in the classroom. Because I consider homework an important extension of
the school day, children who complete their homework regularly progress smoothly
with less difficulty than those who do not. If your child struggled in class with a particular skill
or requires additional practice, I will send a note home to you with the
specific area of difficulty. If your child is struggling with homework or becomes
frustrated, please write a note to me explaining the difficulty so that we can
review in class. Sometimes a general review, one more time, is all it takes. All
homework should be labeled with the date and "HW" before beginning. We will use
both sides of the paper in the copybooks and begin an assignment directly after
the previous assignment in order to use the copybooks efficiently.
Homework will be assigned each night, except Fridays. Each night, including weekends, I send home the BCF and YCF for review of spelling and vocabulary words. It's not uncommon for the children to have a spelling test on a Monday. Long-term projects are expected to be worked on on weekends when necessary. I post the homework for the week on the homework site, accessible from my homepage. I also send a hard copy of the week's homework home on Mondays in the SUS folder. The homework sheet should stay in the folder so that we can make changes when necessary. If there is a substantial change in the homework requirement for any given night, I will post the change on the 1B Bulletin Board, accessible from the homework site link below and/or my homepage. After Christmas break, homework will only be available online. If you do not have access to the homework site, please let me know.
Your child's progress in the classroom is a partnership between home and school
and the homework process can be one way to facilitate this. I appreciate your
help as we navigate the school year together.![]()
