September 2008

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the fifth grade.  We are delighted to have the opportunity to teach your child this year.  We are looking forward to a successful year.  We would like to introduce ourselves and give you some basic information regarding the fifth grade.

Your child will see a variety of teachers this year.  Mrs. Beltrán teaches 5A reading, 5A social studies, 5A religion, and all math classes except specialized and advanced math. Miss Hartman teaches 5B reading, 5B social studies, 5B religion, and all of the English and spelling classes.  Mrs. Lorber teaches 5C reading, 5C religion, and all of the science classes. Mrs. Howe teaches 5C social studies and advanced math.  Mrs. Folio teaches specialized reading.  Mrs. Wunder teaches specialized math.

All assignments are to be done in pen, in cursive, and in complete sentences unless otherwise stated.  It is very important that if your child is absent efforts be made to obtain and return necessary assignments.  Students absent on the day of the test generally must take the test the day they return.

Homework will include daily written assignments, study or review, and long-range assignments.  Students should also be reading each night.  Missed homework assignments are expected to be completed and returned the following day.  Homework will not be accepted after the second day.  Some assignments will be long range.  Book reports are considered long-range assignments.  If a long-range assignment is not received on the due date, 10 points will be deducted for the first day late and 5 points for each day after.  It is the student's responsibility to write their homework.

Children must come prepared for class including textbook, workbook, copybook, red/blue pens, pencils, folder, a book to read, and any required assignments.  No binders, whiteout, markers, loose-leaf, cell phones, electronic games are allowed in school.  Please read and sign the handbook sent home with the youngest child in the school.

Attached you will find specific information for each of the fifth grade teachers.  These are general guidelines and are not all-inclusive. We are aware that this is a lot of information at one time. Please put this in a safe place and refer to it throughout the year.  Feel free to contact us by note if something is unclear or you have any questions. Mrs. Lorber has a web page located at http://ideas4us.com/clorber/ Mrs. Beltrán has a web page located at http://ideas4us.com/sbeltran/ and Miss Hartman has a web page located at http://ideas4us.com/shartman/

We look forward to a pleasant year with your child.  Thank you for sending her/him to Saint Ursula School.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Respectfully yours,
Mrs. Susan Beltrán 5A
Miss Suzanne Hartman 5B
Mrs. Chris Lorber 5C
