5C Book Report Information

Below you will find information about the book reports for the 2008 - 2009 year. Your child will be assigned a specific type of book to read each month. He/she may choose the activity to complete for each book. Activities are listed on the last page of this packet. Some books lend themselves to certain types of activities. Remember your child must complete at least one written, one oral, and one art activity this year. The book reports and types of books are listed on the next page. Below is the format and how the book report will be graded. Please complete the format on looseleaf or on the computer. If you have any questions, please let me know.

GRADING FORMAT FOR BOOK REPORTS(30 Points)

Title 3 point (underline the title) 

Author 2 point

Illustrator/# of pages 2 points

Genre 3 points (eg. historical fiction) 

Opinion section 15 points (include whether you liked the book or not, why, give at least 3 examples from the book to explain your answer)

Main Characters 15 points (give a brief description of each character)

Setting (When/Where) 10 points

Summary 30 points (about 3 paragraphs include key events from the beginning, middle, and end of book)

Activity 20 points

GENRE (Type of Book)

Due October 13

            Mystery Story - Fictional story that concentrates on finding clues to discover why an incident took place (Horror Books Accepted)

            Science Fiction - Fictional book based on principles or possibilities of nature, often involving future times, space travel, other worlds

Fantasy - Fictional story created in writing rather than handed down orally in which events seem impossible

            Adventure Story - Fictional story involving danger, courage, and a struggle with the natural elements

 

Due November 10 (written report done in school-activity completed at home)

Mrs. Lorber will supply books for this month's book reports. Contact me when ready to select a book. All books must be selected by October 9th. In lieu of a summary an in-class quiz will be given.

 

Due December 8

            Historical Fiction - Fictional book emphasizing historical setting and usually historical characters or events

            Realistic Fiction - Fictional book that portrays people dealing with general problems of life as the problems exist in modern times

 

Due February 2 (written report done in school - activity completed at home)

Due March 16

            Biography - Nonfiction book about a noteworthy person

            Autobiography - Nonfiction book written by author about author

 

Due May 4 (written report done in school)

            Informational Book - Nonfiction book that explains something or suggests experiments, activities, procedures, or how-to

            Book of Poetry - Book of short selections, sometimes in rhyming or rhythmic patterns of words

            Book of Folk Tales - Book of legends, fables, tall tales, epics, myths, old fairy tales, or other traditional stories formerly handed down by word of mouth

            Book of Plays - Book of fictional stories written in drama format, almost all dialogue

You must complete at least one written, one oral, and one art activity this year.

WRITTEN ACTIVITIES

1. Pretend that you can spend a day with one of the characters. Which character would you choose? Why? What would you do?

2. Write a real letter to the author of the book. Send it in care of the publisher. Keep a   copy to really send.

3. Pretend to send a letter to a character in the book. Tell the character how his/her life is the same or different from yours.

4. Write a letter to a friend and try to persuade him/her to read the book.

5. Write about something that happened in the book in the same way a newspaper reporter would describe it. Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?

6. Make a short diary / journal for one of the characters in the book. Describe a few days of his/her life.

7. Interview a character in the book. Write at least 10 questions and answers.

8. Compare the movie and book versions of the same story.

ORAL PRESENTATION ACTIVITIES (These may be video taped.)

9. Show the class how to make something you learned how to make from your book.

10. Prepare a news broadcast about something that happened in the book.

            Include Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?

11. Act out a commercial for your book. Make it persuasive and entertaining.

12. Dress up as a character in the book and tell about yourself or about one of the adventures you had.

13. Prepare a book talk to persuade others to read the book.

14. Prepare a PowerPoint Presentation to present to the class telling about your book.

15. Complete #7 in class or on video tape.

ART ACTIVITIES

16. Make a diorama that describes a scene in the book. Include a written explanation of the scene. (a shoe box works great)

17. Use poster board to make an advertisement for the book. Use at least 5 adjectives. Make it attractive and persuasive.

18. Make a comic strip out one of the scenes in the book.

19. Make a book jacket including title/author on cover with summary of left inside and any information you have about the author on the right inside sleeve.

20. Make two or more puppets to represent characters from the book and put on a show.

21. Make a pocket-sized book about the story for a friend. Your book should include the main characters, setting, and a short summary.

22. Make a scrapbook of things related to the book. Be sure to explain each item.

23. Make a timeline of the plot showing the main events. Use pictures and words.

24. Make a story cube. The directions are as follows:

       A boutique tissue box works well. On one side list  the title/ author/ your

       name and date. One another side list the characters. On a third side list the

       setting. One a fourth side write your opinion. On the fifth side draw an

       important event from the story. On the sixth side write a brief summary of the

       story. Cut loose-leaf to fit if need
